The Indian Ringneck Parrot is a medium-sized parrot native to Africa and the Indian subcontinent. They are now found in large populations worldwide and are bred on almost every continent for the exotic bird trade. These resilient birds can survive even in extreme climates, including very low winter temperatures.
Description
The Indian Ringneck Parakeet is sexually dimorphic, meaning you can distinguish genders by their physical appearance. Mature males (18 months+) have a dark ring that closes on the back of their neck in pink. Both sexes have a distinctive green color with a red beak and a long blue tail. In aviculture, several mutations have been bred, including blue, yellow, turquoise, violet, grey, white, pied, and other colors. They are 15-17 inches long, with a tail as long as their body.
Vocalization and Training
Indian Ringnecks are popular pets because they are excellent talkers. A basic YouTube search will show many videos of ringnecks talking, whistling, and mimicking sounds. They have a high-pitched sound that can be loud but is usually short and not constant, making them suitable for small houses, condos, and apartments if you keep only one. However, ringnecks are not easy for beginners. They are best suited for experienced bird owners due to their stubbornness in training. They go through a “teenage” stage lasting 6-12 months, where they are flighty and prefer to be left alone. If not properly handled, it will be nearly impossible to have a trained bird in adulthood.
Lifespan and Diet
With proper care, captive Indian Ringnecks can live 20-30 years. However, many do not reach this age due to inadequate diet and exercise. At Cpbirds.com, we ensure that the baby you get is weaned to a high-quality diet consisting of plain cockatiel seed mix, RoudyBush Mini Maintenance Pellets, and fresh fruits and vegetables.
