Chickens, Ducks, Quail and Game Birds

Many pet bird owners have other birds on their property, making it crucial to source birds from disease-tested and ethically responsible sources to ensure the health of their pets. Although CPbirds.com does not keep chickens, ducks, quail and other game birds, we do get a lot of questions on how to safely keep these birds. To shed light on this, I consulted Alexandra Douglas, owner of Stellar Game Birds, Poultry, Waterfowl LLC, to explain the differences between a mass-producing industrial operation and a private bio-secured farm.
When you think of a farm, you might picture rolling pastures, clucking hens, and the occasional rooster announcing the sunrise. But Stellar Game Birds, Poultry, Waterfowl LLC is far more than your average homestead—it’s a hub for ethical breeding, sustainable farming, and hands-on education. Nestled in West Central Florida, this farm is the brainchild of Alexandra, also known as “The Quail Lady,” a seasoned expert in game bird breeding, poultry management, and regenerative agriculture.
With over 20 years of experience raising birds and livestock, Alexandra has built Stellar Game Birds into a leading name in heritage and exotic poultry, waterfowl, and game birds. But this isn’t just a farm that sells birds—it’s a resource for homesteaders, small farmers, and anyone looking to raise poultry responsibly. Through breeding programs, educational content, and a commitment to sustainability, Stellar Game Birds is paving the way for the future of small-scale poultry farming.

Chickens, Ducks and Quail
Chickens, ducks and quail should not be housed in the same cage as hookbills or parrots. First, they can harm each other with aggression on either side, secondly, they have different dietary needs thus needing to be fed different foods. Third, there are some health concerns that must be taken into consideration. Chickens can carry some diseases that may be harmful to parrots such as Mycroplasma gallisepticum (MG) and good biosecurity measures must be in place in order to avoid these issues. Cleanliness of their living areas, free from feces, minimizes the risk of disease transmission.

Rare Breeds & Conservation
One of the interesting facts that I love about StellarGameBirds.net is that they take pride of rearing rare breeds for conservation purposes. This makes Alexandra a leading expert in the homesteading and Game Bird community.
